This is a major area of debate in our household. I am a cat person. Adrian is a dog person. We would like a pet. How do we resolve this? Adrian likes puppies because they are enthusiastic and devoted. I like kittens because they are charming, amusing, cuddly, loving, and lower-maintenance. Adrian proposes that we fill our 100m2 apartment on the 11th floor with two Saint Bernards:

I’m not entirely sure this is a wise idea. I propose that two of these would be more delightful:

Chartreux cats may have been originally bred by Carthusian French monks when they weren’t busy making Chartreuse liqueur. They are quiet, intelligent, healthy, affectionate, and playful. Many will fetch a ball and respond to their names. They do not mind being left alone for long periods, though they will follow often their humans when they move from one room to another, and like to sleep on top of those they love.

The debate continues…

  1. Kitties! For an apartment and no yard? Kitties all the way. Seriously, when the puppy needs to piddle and it’s raining (so , like every other day here) who’s gonna take them out? We have 2 cats and both play fetch and respond to their names and cuddle (Luna more but Rex does occasionally).

    KITTIES!!!

  2. I still think one of each is the way forwards. I like the way you have given us more information about your favourite though, very clever!

At least when you get here you’ll only be living across the road from a park for the dog to, um, do it’s business in.

    Those cats are gorgeous though…

  3. ooh yes I vote cat – so perfect for an apartment. I love how homely a place looks with a cat snuggled on the rug or the end of the bed..

  4. Those puppies are clearly cuter.

Plus last time we looked after a cat you trained it to climb onto my face while I was asleep and try to smother me.

  5. Definitely kitty. There are a couple of other breeds of cat that are a bit more doggie-like in their behaviour, like the Devon or Cornish Rex.

  6. I’ve owned dogs and cats and for a long time had two of each. I adore the way dogs are such enthusiastic companions, and I like how quiet cats are.

Right now, I own two cats, one of them acquired when I lived in Belgium. Cats are ideal for people who like to make day and weekend trips. And you never have to walk them in the rain.

I did a bit of work in Brussels with some women who rescue cats. If you’d like their names, let me know. I’ve set up many expats with wonderful feline companions!

  7. Clearly, the decision is obvious: Cats.
