On the linguistic side, I enjoyed the time in France where I was not able to understand other people's conversation in the tram, bus, cinema whatever. There is a lot of stuff you really don't want to know. Once you get to know the language better, you can't avoid it though... I find it weird when I'm in England; I have to make up for my inability to communicate here by talking to everyone over there... Usually I go for a haircut as soon as I arrive, my hairdresser expects chatter and I try to get the talking out of my system.
