Oh my goodness, my heart was beating fast for you as I read that passage about not having visas. I'm so glad that it worked out for you. Sounds like you had an awesome time in Tunisia. Makes me want to go there myself! I LOVE the photo of you and Hayden - it's a good one. He is growing up so fast!

Part of the problem may be that you are a smart, intelligent person. I always found I was overly critical of myself because I expect perfection from myself. So I was scared to open my mouth and make a mistake, so then I was nervous, so then I made more mistakes. . .and then I didn't participate in as many conversations because I didn't want to sound like an idiot. Whereas people I knew who didn't care about making mistakes made much faster progress than I did! Also, language for children is *very* different - a whole different language almost.

Thanks Laura and Cedric - it's encouraging to hear from those who have much greater proficiency than I.

Gina - Mandarin will certainly be an asset if she can master it. I hope they give her enough exposure.

This is from the event webpage on couchsurfing, http://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=175049
they have a meeting this thursday 6/12 and then a dinner right next to porte de Hal on friday 7/12 and then another meeting on sunday 9/12. So you can see they're quite a busy bunch.
Unfortunately I won't be able to go to any of these because I will be in Vienna next weekend but if you're interested you can always contact one of the organisers on couchsurfing (you can log in with your facebook account).

Anyway, just a suggestion :-) Even if you would feel that it's too frustrating to try and speak french it's still a fun way to meet more people in brussels. I got to know a whole bunch of people this way.

Cedric

I think your french learning is going great, seems like your problem is having had unrealistic expectations at the start about the speed at which people can learn a language if they're not constantly immersed in it. More than needing more classes I think you need to look for more social settings where you would actually be forced to speak french. Many people are affraid of that, wanting to be able to speak a language better before actually using it in a social setting, but that way takes wayyy longer. I often meet up with couchsufing.org's "french conversation table" where a whole bunch of non-native french speakers of all levels of proficiency meet up once or twice a week to speak french. Of course I realise it's kind of difficult to leave the house with Hayden etc, but maybe some other social setting where you would have to speak french? Classes can be useful to get a basic amount of grammar and vocabulary, but really, grammar and vocabulary are overrated :-) the only thing that matters is speaking regularly, even if it's frustrating.
